What the PSI directory does and does not establish
The Psychological Society of Ireland’s public guidance explains its directory of Chartered members. It also makes a crucial distinction: the Society does not determine an individual psychologist’s competence for every particular area of work. Directory membership should therefore lead to questions about relevant experience, rather than replace them.
For an initial enquiry, explain the purpose in one sentence. Then ask whether the practitioner undertakes that assessment, who interprets the results and what written feedback is included. You do not need to disclose a detailed personal history in a first message just to find out whether the service is relevant.
Questions to take into a first conversation
Use this original checklist to make a booking discussion concrete: Which question will this assessment answer? Which questionnaire or other methods will be used? What are their limitations for my situation? What does the total fee include? When and how will feedback be provided? Who will receive the report?
If the result is for someone else, ask how the practitioner will address the recipient’s requirements. For example, “I need a report for this stated purpose; can you confirm whether your service covers it?” is more useful than “Do you offer a personality test?” The latter can refer to very different products.
An understandable explanation should connect the methods to your question. A long list of scales or an impressive badge cannot do that on its own.
Keep location separate from personality
